Sometimes, we all need times like University of Sto. Tomas’ mighty comeback against Ateneo de Manila University last Saturday to remind ourselves that the reigning MVP is still human.
At the forefront of building a lead of as much as 16 in the third quarter, Kiefer Ravena had no field goals and only scored one point all while watching the Growling Tigers go on a 32-6 run to end the game, stunning the Blue Eagles in the process.
Ravena was quick to credit Kevin Ferrer and company for “making their shots” and at the same time, took all the blame for his team’s meltdown. “Sakin talaga yung game,” he told reporters.
All in all, the Ateneo star only made four of his 18 attempts and at one point, muffed three straight free throws just as UST was making their run. “My teammates stepped up, I didn’t so it’s all on me,” he said.
He also added, “Matt (Nieto) stepped up, Von (Pessumal) went big time today, also John (Apacible) and Fonso (Gotladera). It was on me during the latter part. It was my time, but I couldn’t make my shots.”
To be clear, however, Ravena opted to make plays for his teammates in the endgame and the Eagles witnessed three consecutive fruitless possessions courtesy of Pessumal and Jerie Pingoy. The reigning MVP finally took a shot inside the last 60 seconds, but the Tigers defended him well.
The King Eagle re-assured the Katipunan faithful that they will only come back stronger following the comeback. “It’s all part of the game and we just have to move on from it. We have to learn from it,” he said.
