Sunday’s opening day UAAP Men’s football match saw defending champions Far Eastern University take on University of the Philippines in a rematch of their Season 77 semifinals matchup, with the match ending in a scoreless draw.
While UP coach Anto Gonzales said that he was pretty satisfied with how his boys handled the defending champs, FEU captain and former MVP Paolo Bugas was a little less than pleased with the opening matchup.
When asked about his assessment of their first outing, Bugas said that they were still adjusting to the size of the field and raised his concerns about FEU’s first round schedule.
“Nagdududa kami sa lahat ng schedule namin eh. Most of the games namin, 1pm lahat, while yung ibang teams nagpapalitan, so bakit parang...kami yung dinidiin eh!” Bugas told the media. “Parang may nabasa pa ako na blog na FEU lang yung mag-aadjust, so bakit parang kami yung pinag-iinitan?”
Bugas also pointed out that they hardly have any 3:00 pm or 4:00 pm games, and no night games.
“Dapat bigyan din nila kami ng 3pm or 4pm, or night game sa Ateneo man lang, pero wala eh!”
For reference, here’s what FEU’s first round schedule looks like:
Bugas seems to have a point, as in their seven first round meetings, five of them are early afternoon games when the sun is in it’s highest and hottest point, five are at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig considerably farther from the Tamaraws’ home-base of FEU-Diliman, only two games are scheduled for the late afternoon slot, and only two games will be played in Ateneo.
“Nahihirapan kami mag-adjust, tapos maliit yung field. Oo, tama sila na mag-aadjust kami, pero dapat, to be fair lang, sa schedule pa lang halata na eh.”
Does the former UAAP MVP and national team veteran have a point? Do the schedule makers have it in for the defending champions?
