TOTAL DOMINATION. DLSU proved to be no match for UST.

New-look University of Sto. Tomas was keeping close to fully-loaded De La Salle University on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

Until the Green Archers unleashed their now patented mayhem, that is.

Squeezing out 40 turnovers and quickly converting them into 34 points, DLSU ran roughshod on the Growling Tigers to the tune of 38 points, 100-62, for their third consecutive victory in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Ben Mbala remained a force with an 18-point, 16-rebound double-double while Jeron Teng collected 13 points, five points, two assists, and two steals. “This is what happens when we play as a team,” coach Aldin Ayo said after the game.

After one and a half quarters, however, UST still had a chance and were only chasing down a two-point deficit until the Green Archers turned it on via a vicious 33-9 onslaught that blew the game wide open, 67-41, at the 4:31 mark of the third.

“Yun ang game-changer – how we started the third canto,” Ayo expressed.

DLSU would only push their foot even harder on the throats of their opponents with another 18-10 run for an 85-51 advantage inside the last seven minutes. It was at that point that Ayo sent in his third unit – and even then, they were able to outscore their opponents by three points the rest of the way.

The Archers owned the glass with 59 rebounds, 29 coming at the offensive end for a massive margin of 26-0 in second chance points. For comparison, the Tigers only had 41 rebounds as a team.

Not only did the all-out domination keep the title favorites alone atop the leaderboard now at 3-0, it also wound up to be UST’s worst loss in 10 years. Back then, they lost to Ateneo de Manila University by 36 points, 114-78.

Renzo Subido and his 18 points paced the Tigers. The latest victim of the odds-on title favorites, however, they now drop to 1-2 in the season.
