After W, Vigil promises UST: ‘Hindi lang ito one game’

STILL HERE. Captain Louie Vigil was adamant that UST will keep clawing until the end.

The University of Sto. Tomas is finally back in the win column following an upset of National University last Saturday.

Losers of five in a row before a well-earned 73-69 win last Saturday, the Growling Tigers’ hopes to do better than last season’s runner-up finish are dimmer than first expected. At 3-7, they are knotted at sixth place with UP and would have to win out in their remaining assignments just to have a chance at a playoff berth.

Still, team captain Louie Vigil said that quit is not – nor will it ever be – in their vocabulary. As he put it, “Itong grupo namin ngayon, yung battle cry is hindi kami susuko. Yun yung pinapa-realize sa amin nila coach sa mga practice – na ‘di kami dapat mawalan ng hope.”

Indeed, the Bulldogs were billed as the favorites in their matchup only to see UST impose their will right from tip-off and score a wire-to-wire-win.

In Vigil’s eyes, their confidence picked up from their loss to Far Eastern University last Wednesday. “Sobrang ganda ng defense namin last game tapos ngayon, dinagdagan namin ng swerte sa offense,” he expressed.

Now they have finally found their rhythm in both ends, the Tigers’ captain said they are only hoping to keep it going. “I hope na next game, nandyan pa rin yung consistency kasi mahirap mahanap yun lalo na rito sa UAAP,” he said.

He then continued, while also making a promise to the faithful over as Espana, “Pero we are confident na hindi lang ito one game.”

For his part, coach Boy Sablan said that all he knows is that he and his boys will just go out and give their best for their remaining assignments. “Sabi ko nga sa kanila, one game at a time lang. Our next game is La Salle so yun ang paghahandaan namin,” he said.

He then continued, “Sana maganda rin ang magiging preparation namin.”
