The first team to fall to the University of the East in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament, the shine was taken out of Adamson University.
And so, when their next matchup rolled along, they wanted nothing more than to get their shine back.
The Soaring Falcons did just that by climbing the broad shoulders of Papi Sarr to a 79-71 victory versus University of the East on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Our last few games, being a young team, we struggled a bit. At least, this win, we can use as a springboard,” coach Franz Pumaren said, pointing to their seven-point stunner of a defeat to the Red Warriors back in the first round as their main motivation.
Still, Adamson actually didn’t get off to the best of starts and trailed by 10 in the second quarter before finally getting the bearings and knotting the score at 40 at the half.
It was at that point that their Cameroonian center took over and pounded in all but five of his 25 points in the second half. His 12-point third quarter led to the Falcons’ biggest lead of the game, 69-55.
UE weren’t giving up just yet and Philip Manalang shot them to within 66-70, inside the last five minutes. Sarr wasted no time in responding, however, and his back-to-back baskets re-established an eight-point Adamson advantage.
The Falcons’ man in the middle also tallied 15 rebounds and three blocks while Jerrick Ahanmisi added 17 markers of his own in their ascent to 5-5. Now standing solo fourth, Pumaren expressed, “Our main goal was to be competitive and to improve from las year. With the way we’re competing, I think we have a good chance at the Final Four.”
On the other hand, the Warriors slipped to 2-9 despite the best efforts of Alvin Pasaol who had 16 points.
