The breakthrough continues for the University of the Philippines long even after they have bowed out of contention.
Finishing with a record of 5-11, their best in a decade, the Fighting Maroons will also celebrate their first player to make the Mythical Team in 10 years.
Swingman Paul Desiderio, who finished fourth in terms of Statistical Points, will join MVP Ben Mbala and Jeron Teng, both of De La Salle University; Raymar Jose of Far Eastern University; and Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo de Manila University as the league’s best players.
Since Marvin Cruz in 2006, no State U player has been recognized in the Mythical Team – until Desiderio.
All of it came as no surprise to UP coach Bo Perasol. As he put it, “Paul understood his responsibility. This was not because he just wanted to pile up numbers, but because that was what we needed from him in order for us to have a chance at winning.”
For his part, however, the Cebuano said he is far from content with the individual honor. “Masaya ako, pero hindi pa ako satisfied. Gusto ko pa rin bago ako umalis ng UP, makapasok kami sa Final Four,” he said.
Desiderio will play his fifth and final year for the Maroons next year.
