University of Sto. Tomas rediscovered its form to claim its first victory in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, against listless University of the East on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Coming off a five-set defeat at the hands of grand slam-seeking De La Salle University Saturday, the Tigresses were all business despite some shaky moments in the third set for a 1-1 win-loss record.
Sisi Rondina, fresh from a 28-point outing on her season debut, waxed-hot once again and delivered the closing blow in the third frame after the Lady Warriors saved two match points. She had 20 points with all but one coming off attacks.
“Maganda ‘yung bounce back kasi coming from a five-set loss tapos kuha ng straight set na laro,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.
Rondina also chipped in on floor defense with nine digs for UST. Dimdim Pacres had eight markers, Tin Francisco got seven points while Fil-Italian Milena Alessandrini had six markers and six excellent receptions for the Tigresses, who played without Carla Sandoval because of a sore wisdom tooth.
UE dropped to 0-2 slate and absorbed its ninth straight defeat since last season.
Mary Anne Mendrez had 10 points while Judith Abil, who got 12 markers in a five-set loss to University of the Philippines, had nine for the Lady Warriors. Shaya Adorador's struggle continued as the graduating hitter was limited to only two points.
