University of the Philippines followed their opening day win over defending champions Ateneo with another stellar outing, beating University of the East, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football tournament.
Third-year striker King Miyagi was on-point for the Fighting Maroons as he finished with a brace, hitting in the 28th minute, and then capitalizing on an error from UE keeper Frank Rieza to hit once more in the 57th minute.
Foward JB Borlongan, who proved to be the difference-maker against Ateneo on opening day, also got on the board for UP, as the third-year man double the Maroon lead in the 39th minute.
As always, the Maroons played their brand of football, dominating the possessions and stifling the Red Warriors on defense.
UE, who was also coming off an opening day win against National University, tried to push the action midway through the first half, but lost all momentum following UP’s first conversion.
“We've been preparing for this game, I think nakuha naman namin ang objectives na sinet ni coach.” Miyagi told ABS-CBN Sports following his two-goal performance. “I’m proud of the team, and I think everyone should also be proud of the team.”
The Maroons are doing well so far in the post-Daniel Gadia and Ace Villaneuva era, and Miyagi says that their pre-season work has been a huge part of their early success.
“Nawala ang main keeper namin and main fields pero I think maganda naman ang ginawa nina coach sa pre-season games sa Ang Liga, Unigames, nakukuha namin ang adjustments sa team.”
The Maroons improve to two wins in two games for Season 80, good for six points and early possesion of the top spot, ahead of UST, who also picked up their second win earlier in the afternoon, on goal difference.
UE drops to one win and one loss in two matches for three points.
