Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo’s scoring prowess was in full display Sunday as he powered the three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University to a 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21 victory over University of the Philippines in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The graduating hitter registered a season-best 30 points in an MVP performance that saw him scatter 21 spikes, five kill blocks and four aces while adding 11 excellent receptions and seven digs in the Blue Eagles’ fifth straight win for a 5-1 win-loss record.
Ateneo gave away 36 points off errors but it hardly mattered with Espejo’s smoking guns peppering the Fighting Maroons’ defense.
Gian Glorioso scored 13 points while Season 79 Rookie of the Year Chumason Njigha adding 12 markers for the Katipunan-based squad, which rained down 53 attacks with Ish Polvorosa tallying 45 excellent sets to orchestrate their fluid offensive flow.
The Maroons’ losing woes continued as they absorbed their fourth defeat in a row after five outings.
John Millete had 18 points while Bryle Consuelo and Wendel Miguel got 14 and 11 markers, respectively, for UP.
