Let this serve as a warning.
Two-time defending champion De La Salle University is out to exact revenge on its first round tormentors.
The Lady Spikers destroyed National University in straight sets payback, 27-25, 27-25, 25-16, on Saturday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.
DLSU handed the Lady Bulldogs their second loss as the Lady Spikers tied their victim at the top spot with 6-2 win-loss slate.
“One week ‘yung training namin so may added motivation na, ‘Uy natalo tayo dito sa first round.’ So siguro naging motivation din namin ‘yun coming into this game,” said Kianna Kim Dy, who had 14 points to lead the Taft-based squad.
NU defeated DLSU, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14, last February 18 in the Lady Spikers’ first of two losses in their last four games to end the first round. DLSU also dropped a four-set match against Adamson University before closing the opening round with a four-set win over archrival Ateneo de Manila University last week.
“Syempre naging tatak ng La Salle na kapag natalo babawi kami,” said Dy. “‘Yun rin ang sinasabi ni coach na malapit na kami manalo tapos bibitaw, siguro ‘yun ‘yung pina-practice namin na panapos lagi kasi sayang eh nandoon na.”
The Lady Spikers made their revenge even sweeter – or colder if you’re NU – by taking the win in a come-from-behind fashion in the first two sets.
DLSU went down, 14-21, in the opening set before the Lady Spiker blasted a 9-2 rally capped by reigning Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron’s service ace. NU and DLSU traded errors in the next play that tied it at 24.
The Lady Bulldogs took a second set point advantage but Jaja Santiago committed two of NU’s last three errors to surrender the frame to DLSU.
The Lady Bulldogs again buried the Lady Spikers to a 17-10 hole only to allow the Taft-based squad to mount a comeback to steal the frame.
With momentum on their side, the Lady Spikers built a 22-13 lead on their way to completing the sweep.
“So I think maganda sa team na pinakita ang maturity kasi we were down by ilang points tapos hinabol namin parang nagkakumpyansa din kami,” Dy said.
DLSU will face University of the Philippines on Wednesday.
