CJ Cansino came out of the game with four minutes remaining in University of Sto. Tomas’ matchup with Adamson University on Wednesday.
Apparently, his left foot landed awkwardly after he challenged Simon Camacho’s fastbreak lay-up.
The super rookie took a while to get up and had to be supported by two teammates back to the locker room.
There, Cansino said he was treated for a while before deciding to go back on the court. “Nung una, sobrang sakit, pero kinaya ko pa rin. May pinainom lang sa akin (sa dugout),” he told reporters post-game.
To the surprise of just about everybody, not long after he was helped back to the dugout, he made his return to action with under two minutes left. “Kailangan naming manalo e. Hindi ko na iniisip yung mangyayari basta gusto ko lang manalo,” he said.
In the end, his efforts of 17 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists all while playing through injury was for naught as he and the Growling Tigers succumbed to the Soaring Falcons, 83-96.
Still, the 6-foot-2 guard said he had no regrets because he was doing it for UST. “Lahat po talaga, gagawin ko para sa UST,” he said.
Nonetheless, Cansino will have to get his left ankle checked out as initial diagnosis said that it was his Achilles that was hurting.
This is a new issue for him as it was his left foot that had been hurting ever since his time in the UAAP Juniors.
Whatever it is, the 19-year-old is hoping for the best. “Iche-check lang namin bukas to e sure, pero tingin ko, kaya naman,” he said.
