Better late than never for Mark Nonoy and University of Sto. Tomas as they have scored their first back-to-back wins in the 81st Season of the UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Nonoy stuffed the stat sheet as always in just 20 minutes as the Tiger Cubs had their way against De La Salle Zobel, 85-64, on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The one-and-done sensation collected 16 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds, and two steals to lead his team to its first winning streak in the tournament. “We always wanted to end the season on a winning note especially sa mga seniors namin,” a beaming head coach Bonnie Garcia said.
He was joined by Vince Dolendo and Jomar Amador in the 13-0 run that turned a two-point edge to a 27-12 advantage in their favor late in the first quarter.
Both the double-digit lead and the momentum would remain with UST the rest of the way.
Amador and Dolendo wound up with 15 and six points, respectively, as they completed their campaign with a 7-7 standing.
The Tiger Cubs missed out on the Final Four, but coach Bonnie said he is nothing but satisfied with his maiden season as mentor. “Overall, we were short of the Final Four, but we had a very good season. too late lang nag-pick up ng steam yung team,” he said.
For the Junior Archers, Luis Subido topped the scoring column with 14 points. They fail to make the playoffs for the third year in a row with a 4-10 record.
Meanwhile, University of the East got the better of the University of the Philippines Integrated School once more, 80-76.
Hefty big man Jesse Sullano posted a powerful 29-point, 17-rebound double-double while forwards Mike Flores and Leo Almacen merged for 22 markers, 12 boards, and 11 assists.
Main man Shane Dichoso also contributed seven points, 15 rebounds, and six assists to make sure the 2-12 Junior Warriors did not finish the season at the bottom of the standings.
Instead, the 1-13 Junior Maroons now stand at last-place despite the best efforts of Jacob Estrera who scored 30 points.
