League-leading Ateneo de Manila University braces for another tough challenge when the Lady Eagles face feisty University of the Philippines in the rematch of the Battle of Katipunan Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
Action begins at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream.
Ateneo is on a seven-game tear for a 7-1 win-loss record at the solo top spot.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a huge come-from-behind win over University of St. Tomas in five sets last week that saw middle Maddie Madayag set a new kill block record in a single game with 11.
But Ateneo is sure to find that the Lady Maroons will be another tough nut to crack.
UP, which the Lady Eagles beat in straight sets, 25-21, 25-15, 28-26, in the first round, will come into the match brimming with confidence after sweeping three-time defending champion De La Salle University last week in Antipolo.
“We just have to go stronger than today. We pay attention to details, we started a team that we’re going to play against then we make our strategy, so as they say, our strategy worked today. So I hope come the weekend, we have another date with Ateneo, our strategy will work,” said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu after the Lady Maroons’ 25-16, 26-24, 25-19, conquest of the Lady Spikers.
UP holds a 5-3 mark tied with Far Eastern University.
All eyes will be on Tots Carlos, Isa Molde, Justin Dorog, Marist Layug and setter Ayel Estranero as they lead the charge of UP against the solid Ateneo crew led by Madayag, Kath Tolentino, Ponggay Gaston and Bea De Leon.
