Three-time defending champion De La Salle University cruised past also-ran Adamson University, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16, on Sunday to boost its bid for a Final Four berth in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
Rookie Jolina Dela Cruz stepped up on offense to power the Lady Spikers to their eighth win in 11 games to stay at solo second spot and move a win ahead of University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University, which both hold 7-4 slates. DLSU snatched its third win in a row to build momentum heading into the Lady Spikers’ big match against archrival Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday.
Dela Cruz had 13 points off nine attacks, two aces and two kill blocks for the Taft-based squad, which took the win in 76 minutes and was only threatened midway in the second set.
"Good game po kasi siguro po lumabas din po doon yung mga pinag-training namin, yung mga prinaktis namin sa training," said Dela Cruz, who also had 10 digs.
Graduating skipper Des Cheng scored 11 points with all but one coming off attacks while Aduke Ogunsanya and Lourdes Clemente added nine and seven points, respectively, and combined for six of the Lady Spikers' 10 kill blocks.
"Siguro big improvement din sa blocking namin and sa service. Yun nga kung ano ang tina-try naming i-improve sa training lumabas naman in this game which is yun nga blocking and receive," said DLSU setter Michelle Cobb, who tallied 18 excellent sets to help the Lady Spikers hit 34 spikes.
The Lady Spikers easily took the opening set but found some resistance from Adamson in the second when the Lady Falcons erased a 6-12 deficit with a 9-3 blitz to take a 16-15 lead.
DLSU countered with seven unanswered points to reclaim control of the set, 22-16, before finishing off the Lady Falcons. The Lady Spikers controlled the third set early before completing their dominating win.
The Lady Falcons absorbed their seventh straight defeat for a 1-10 card.
Bernadette Flora and Trisha Genesis scored seven points each to lead Adamson while Eli Soyud and Joy Dacoron were limited to combined 10 markers.
