University of Sto. Tomas boosted its chances for a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage after sweeping past Far Eastern University, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23, Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina once again led the way for the Tigresses, who improved to 9-4 win-loss record at solo third spot just half a game behind second-running three-time defending champion De La Salle University.
Earlier, both UST and FEU entered the Final Four outright to join Ateneo de Manila University and DLSU after National University showed University of the Philippines the exit door. The Tigresses made their return in the semis while the Lady Tamaraws copped their fifth straight Final Four berth.
Rondina dropped 21 points with 15 digs and 12 excellent receptions while Laure got 17 markers and 14 digs for the Espana-based squad, which took the win despite 30 miscues.
“Medyo maganda ang ranking ngayon kasi safe na ata kami sa Final Four,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Meron pa kaming remaining games, gusto naming tapusin on a high note.”
The Tigresses can secure a twice-to-beat advantage if they hurdle the Lady Bulldogs in their last elimination round match coupled by DLSU losing its last two games. UST can force a playoff for a semis advantage if it wins against NU and the Lady Spikers lose one of their last two matches.
“May mga laro pa rin na naiiwan, tignan namin kung magbago pa standings,” added Reyes. “Basta na-secure namin Final Four namin at tatapusin namin ng mas maayos para pagdating ng semis mas maganda ang igagalaw namin, awa ng Diyos.”
The Lady Tamaraws slid down to 8-5 record at no. 4 spot.
Heather Guino-o was the only FEU player in double figures with 14 points while France Ronquillo and Jerrili Malabanan combined for 11 markers.
