A late goal from Jermi Darapan propelled Far Eastern University past University of the East, 1-0 in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
The Tamaraws were firmly in control of the action for much of the match as they pushed the pace and kept the Red Warriors on the defensive.
It wasn't until the 79th minute however, that the scoreline was altered, as substitute Darapan found the back of the net to put the home team ahead with roughly ten minutes left in the match.
Looking to avoid another defeat, the Red Warriors turned it on in the final minutes of the match, as they tired to push their offense to come up with an equalizer.
Goal keeper Dave Parac stepped up in a big way for the Tamaraws however as he came up with some late saves to preserve the 1-0 scoreline.
"They were in it mentally, they were trying to do the plays that we were doing in training, but maybe because of the heat, the firmness and the quality of the touches and passes were a bit off," said FEU assistant coach Albert Besa after the match. "I could see that translated into whose game it was if it was a tight game. I believe we controlled the game for most of whole 90 minutes, except maybe for a few lapses here and there."
"With a few adjustments, were were able to score, and come away with the win. It was tight, it could have gone either way, some of our slips almost gave UE a chance to go ahead," he added.
With the win. FEU overtakes Ateneo for the top spot in the standings with 24 points off seven wins, three draws, and two losses.
UE meanwhile, drops to two wins, two draws, and seven losses for eight points.
