The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) shifts its attention to the ballroom as featured playing field this Friday, May 3 as it holds its second Ballroom Formation Dance Competition at the University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavilion at 1 p.m.
The University of Santo Tomas introduced “Ballroom” as a competition event in 2016 when it hosted UAAP Season 79 and made Ballroom Formation as the first featured sport during the UAAP Season LXXIX opening ceremonies. No Ballroom Formation Dance Competition was held in Season 80, but Season 81 host school National University has brought back the sport for the current season.
Three universities will take part in this year’s competition, with University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University, and University of Santo Tomas vying for the sport’s top honors in two categories: Standard and Latin Ballroom.
The UP Ballroom Formation Team dominated the sport during its debut in Season 79 by winning 1st place in both Standard and Latin Ballroom categories. UST won 2nd place in both categories, while University of the East went home with 3rd place in the Latin category and De La Salle University won 3rd place in the Standard category.
Despite having less competing teams this season, all three universities vow to bring their A-game and wow the crowd with their smooth moves on the dance floor.
The UAAP Ballroom Formation Dance Competition is still considered a demo sport for Season 81, similar to its debut in Season 79. This means that results will not be included in the final tally for the league’s overall standings.
