Jerick Ahanmisi is the kind of player who sets such a high standard for himself.
He wants to be the best.
Heck, the guy even has trained his eyes on winning MVP in the oncoming UAAP Season 82.
“I always keep high expectations for myself. That's why I’ve been telling people I want to win MVP,” he told ABS-CBN Sports without hesitation.
It’s no wonder why Ahanmisi is putting pressure on himself to deliver even after Adamson lost a great deal of its veterans with the departures of Sean Manganti, Koko Pingoy, Jonathan Espeleta, and reliable man Papi Sarr.
Much of the scoring load and leadership this year will be on the Fil-American’s hands and as such, he must be at the top of his game every time.
And he’s not slacking off in working out to keep his game on high standards.
“I’ve been working hard for it. I’ve been in the gym every day lifting, doing extra shooting, and working on different areas of my game to get better,” he said. “That’s just something I want to keep myself accountable for - make sure that I’m still playing good, still playing well for everybody to see. Just gotta keep high standards for myself.”
Ahanmisi may be vocal in aspiring to get the highest individual award, but he clears that the main goal remains the same: lead the Falcons to the promised land.
He and the rest of Adamson crew don’t need to look far to fuel their drive this season.
The Falcons are still losing sleep thinking about last year’s semifinals.
“We’re super motivated because as everybody knows we lost in the semifinals against UP,” said Ahanmisi. “For me, I haven’t stopped thinking about that game even until now. I’m pretty sure the vets will say the same.”
While the holdovers see that Final Four loss – a stinging defeat to then twice-to-win handicapped no. 3 seed Maroons – as motivation, Ahanmisi is excited to know that Adamson’s newcomers 6-foot-11 Lenda Dounga, Aaron Fermin, Joem Sabandal, and Joshua Yerro are all raring to prove their worth.
“For the rookies, they’re gonna come in with a lot of fire, a lot of heart, and I think everybody’s gonna be prepared for this season,” he said.
