The MOA Arena floor was full of color on Sunday as the UAAP commenced its 82nd Season.
Hundreds of student-athletes from all eight member-schools filled up the court, clad in their respective colors.
The mixing of blue, green, gold, red, maroon, and white was a sight to see as each and every sport was represented in the grand opening ceremony. "It's not just basketball, it's not just volleyball that's the reason we're all here," Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ, president of season host Ateneo de Manila University, said.
He then continued, "We are first a community before we are competitors."
The latest season of the premiere collegiate league in the country will fly under the banner of "All For More."
According to Villarin, that theme all boils down to doing anything and everything for the greater good. "We're always asked to do the better thing, the greater choice. Every victory, every defeat, will be more than ourselves," he said.
He then continued, "I hope the direction of our energy, of our effort is not just for self, not just for teammate, not just for school, but for country, for God."
After all, the Ateneo president reminded that all that both winning and losing will only make each and every one better. As he put it, "Ipinagdiriwang natin ang isa't-isa. We see our rival and we say thank you because you make me not just better athlete, but a better person."
The oath of sportsmanship led by national fencer Maxine Esteban followed suit.
The program is then set to continue with musical performances by IV of Spades, Autotelic, December Avenue, Itchyworms, and Spongecola.
