Mike and Matt Nieto were at the forefront of the attack as Ateneo de Manila University re-asserted its mastery over archrival De La Salle University in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Mike had 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists to his name while Matt had 15 markers and three boards under his belt in the Blue Eagles' 81-69 decision against the Green Archers. "To be honest, bilang na rin kasi Ateneo-La Salle games namin e so what a way to start our series this season with a big win," the former said.
This was the first time in a long time that the twins simultaneously had good games.
And of course, that was nothing but a welcome development. "Na-miss namin yun. Nung Jrs. nga kasi, palaging sabay good games namin e," Mike said.
In their last two years in high school, the twins were the Blue Eaglets' 1-2 punch that knocked out not just La Salle, but many more opponents.
In their four seasons in the Srs., however, there haven't been those many games wherein they made an impact together - more often than not, it was one or the other.
In combining for 23 points in just the first half in this one, though, Mike and Matt looked like they were running it all the way back to high school. "This is super special. We've been playing together since we were six and playing in a big game like Ateneo-La Salle, it's really special to have your twin brother beside you, playing his career game," the latter said.
He then continued, "Ang sarap ng feeling kasi parang nag-flashback kami - pagtingin ko si court, nakita ko kami pareho ni Mike, may outstanding game."
With 12 games, at the minimum, left in their collegiate careers, the Nietos are only hoping to bring back even more twin kills.
