Far Eastern University’s main strengths in UAAP basketball has always been through its guards.
Scoring guards to be more specific.
Wendell Comboy is next in line in that rich Tamaraw heritage of scoring guards, going off for a career-high 24 points Sunday as FEU locked up win no. 1 in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament against the University of the East.
Comboy torched the UE defense with near 70 percent shooting and had zero turnovers in 26 minutes of play. He also connected on six out of nine three-point shots.
“Tradition naman sa FEU na we rely on our guards, this season is no different,” head coach Olsen Racela said.
“Si Wendell, he’s one of the veterans in the team eh. Konti lang beterano ngayon, so we really have rely on them,” he added.
Comboy’s performance is certainly promising for FEU’s campaign in Season 82 and it should only add to his growing confidence.
However, there’s nothing really unusual in his breakout performance says Comboy.
“Naglaro lang ako kung ano hinihingi ng coaches,” he said.
“Yung mga reminders nila, pinipilit ko lang gawin. Ewan ko rin kung paano nangyari, pero sobrang salamat sa mga teammates ko kasi sila nagbibigay ng good screens at mga pasa kaya ako naka-score ng ganun,” Comboy added.
