ANTIPOLO - Jaydee Tungcab has long been known as a slasher and scorer.

From his time in Adamson High School to Adamson University and two years into suiting up for the University of the Philippines, the 6-foot-3 guard is, without a doubt, bucket-getter.

That's why it was a pleasant surprise for just about everybody that up against University of the East and its super scorer Rey Suerte, Sunday at Ynares Center here, Tungcab was making his presence felt at the other end.

The now 21-year-old was the primary defender on Rey Suerte who was coming off a 31-point outing against De La Salle University, including the game-winner.

This time around, though, the one-and-done star was frustrated to only four points in 2-of-15 shooting to go along with four turnovers.

Ricci Rivero, Noah Webb, David Murrell, and James Spencer also did their part, but the heavy lifting fell on the shoulders of Tungcab.

And that is exactly why he earned the praise of head coach Bo Perasol in the post-win interview. "In the end, it was Jaydee that saved us with his three in the corner and his game-long brilliance in defending Rey Suerte helped us a lot," the latter said as it was also the former's triple that kept the Red Warriors at bay once and for all.

For his part, the slasher-turned-stopper remained humble and said all of this was also a pleasant surprise for him. "'Di ko rin inaasahang mala-lock down ko siya. 'Di ko ine-expect na ganun kasi scorer siya e so given nang maiiskoran niya ako," he said.

Still, the fact remains that Tungcab did a number on Suerte - and that's because he dove headfirst into coach Bo's challenge to play defense. "'Di ko rin alam actually na ako tatao. Sinabi lang sa akin nung practice na kasama ako sa starting five at ako nga raw tatao kay Suerte," he shared.

He then continued, "Ang naisip ko na lang dun, pano ko siya babantayan. Yung mga scout, tinulungan din ako mag-aral."

And moving forward, he only wants to keep working on his end-to-end game. "Sa akin, siyempre, medyo mahirap kasi 'di naman ganun kadali dumepensa, pero tinatanggap ko lang role ko para makatulong sa team ko," he said.
