Rey Suerte celebrated his birthday in practice as University of the East prepared for its match-up opposite Adamson University.
It was only a day after turning 25 that Suerte finally got to celebrate in style, putting on a show with 26 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the Red Warriors' triumph over the Soaring Falcons on Saturday at MOA Arena.
Asked if he had much more energy because of his birthday, he answered, "Oo, siyempre, araw ko e. Sinwerte na ulit."
More than that, though, Suerte said that they wanted to begin the second round with a big bang to send a statement that UE is far from done trying to make a playoff push. "Ginagawa naming motivation na hindi kami pinapansin, pero 'di rin kami nagpapaapekto dun kasi kung ganun, bababa lang yung morale namin. Pasok sa tenga, labas sa kabila lang dapat," he said.
Though they now have their first back-to-back wins in the bag, the Red Warriors say they have much to improve on. "Wag kami dapat masyadong kampante sa mga panalo namin. We need more aggressiveness every game," their one-and-done star said.
And doing just that is also one of Suerte's wishes. As he put it, "Sana, magtuloy-tuloy pa yung mga panalo namin."
After all, bringing back UE to the playoffs is his first and foremost objective - even though the Compostela Valley native is actually on pace to make the Mythical Team. "'Di ko iniisip sarili ko kasi team game 'to e. Balewala lang yung mga ganyan," he shared.
He then continued, "Kung papalarin, why not? Pero yung team lang dapat iniisip namin."
