ANTIPOLO - Far Eastern University stomped on University of the East, 82-58, Sunday at Ynares Center here to stake claim to one of the much coveted slots in the semifinals of the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.

Wendell Comboy waxed hot all game long with 17 points while Royce Alforque and L-Jay Gonzales helped with the heavy lifting for the Tamaraws to charge to an 8-6 standing at the end of the elimination round.

The green and gold made it rain from deep, bombarding their opponents with a total of 12 triples.

That hot shooting from long-range built up the bulk of their 25-point second quarter that blew the game wide open for a 40-26 tally in their favor at halftime.

Comboy accounted for five of those treys while Ken Tuffin also added three of his own.

Alforque and Gonzales, meanwhile, took care of the rest with the former finishing with 13 points and three assists and the latter ending with 12 markers, 10 rebounds, and four dimes.

Even though they are on even ground with University of Sto. Tomas and may also be level with 8-4 University of the Philippines and 6-6 De La Salle University at the end of it all, FEU is assured of the next round by virtue of having a higher quotient in whatever tie they may be in. "We're not done yet. Our goal is to make it to the Final Four then move on from there," head coach Olsen Racela said post-game.

That means that the pressure is now on for either the Fighting Maroons or the Green Archers.

A UP win in its ongoing matchup opposite La Salle will complete the cast for the next round - with Ateneo de Manila University as top-seed, UP as two-seed, FEU as three-seed, and UST as four-seed.

Otherwise, the Green Archers, the Fighting Maroons, and the Growling Tigers are all still vying for the remaining two slots in the semifinals.

The Tamaraws will now get a break as they wait for whatever happens to the other playoff hopefuls. "We've achieved our first goal. Next goal na kami," coach Olsen said.

For the Red Warriors, Rey Suerte showed the way with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Unable to keep up with their opponents, they dropped to 3-10 with one game remaining in their schedule.
