In a year, Mark Nonoy has seamlessly transitioned from one-and-done star in the UAAP Jrs. to top rookie in the Srs.
And without a doubt, becoming the first Rookie of the Year hailing from University of Sto. Tomas in a decade was nothing but an honor. "Sa akin, 'di ko naman naisip maging Rookie of the Year, pero para sa akin, isang karangalan din para sa UST community yun," he said as the awardees were announced, Wednesday.
Still, the 5-foot-8 playmaker made it clear that only one trophy matters. As he put it, "Pero para sa akin, iba pa rin pag lahat kayo, may award. Kaya yung championship, yun yung goal namin."
Indeed, in Nonoy's eyes, the award for top rookie is just a bonus to all the hard work he has put forth this season for the Growling Tigers. "Siguro, naabot na yung isa sa goal ko na maging Rookie of the Year, pero sabi nga nila coach, hindi ko na kailangang magpakilala pa. Kailangan lang namin is manalo pa talaga," he said.
And with that, he, Season MVP Soulemane Chabi Yo, and the rest of their teammates have a long ways to go before their ultimate goal. "Nandun na yung individual award so yung kailangan na lang talaga is ipanalo na lang yung every game namin para sa championship naman," he said.
