HD Spikers reign supreme

Cignal completed its conquest of the 2019 Spikers' Turf Reinforced Conference.

Cignal came back from a  set down to dethrone Go For Gold-Air Force and rule the 2019 Spikers’ Turf Reinforced Conference with a 26-24, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7, best-of-three Finals Game 2 win Sunday evening at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Marck Espejo fired on all cylinders, tallying 28 points with 25 coming from attacks while logging 24 excellent receptions on his way to powering the HD Spikers to the throne and grabbing the Finals Most Valuable Player award in the process.

Jude Garcia provided the support as he contributed 19 markers for Cignal.

The quartet of Garcia, Ysay Marasigan, Rex Intal and Espejo connived to build a 6-2 advantage in the fifth set. Espejo and Garcia stretched the HD Spikers’ lead up to seven points. 

The Jet Spikers never got a chance to put up a threat on Cignal's comfortable cushion as Espejo sealed their reign with back-to-back hits.

Marasigan and JP Bugaoan chipped in 13 points apiece while Vince Mangulaban dished out 35 excellent sets for the HD Spikers, which won their fourth title.

Bryan Bagunas led Air Force with 25 points while season MVP Ranran Abdilla got 17 markers.

Meanwhile, despite losing Game Two, PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters was awarded as the bronze after edging the Sta. Elena Ball Hammers in the quotient wars.

Meanwhile, Abdilla bagged the Conference MVP award after the native of Tawi-Tawi led the league in scoring in the elimination round with 203 total points, averaging 18.45 points per outing. 

The 6-foot-1 product of La Salle-Dasmarinas also took the 1st Best Open Spiker.

Five-time Spikers’ Turf MVP and Cignal star Marck Espejo got the 2nd Best Open Spiker plum, Berhashidin Daymil of the Sta. Elena-NU nabbed the 1st Best Middle Blocker honor while the 2nd Best Middle Blocker was handed to Air Force tower Kim Malabunga.

Rounding up the individual winners were PLDT’s John Vic De Guzman (Best Opposite Spikers), Manuel Sumanguid of Cignal (Best Libero) and Vince Mangulabnan (Best Setter).
