CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's Travis Wood became the first relief pitcher since 1924 to hit a home run in a playoff game, helping the Cubs beat San Francisco 5-2 on Saturday and take a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series.
Ben Zobrist put Chicago ahead in the first inning with a run-scoring single off former Cub and now Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija, and pitcher Kyle Hendricks hit a two-run single in a three-run second.
Hendricks left with a 4-2 lead in the fourth when he was hit on the right forearm by a line drive.
His replacement Wood finished off the top of the fourth, then in the bottom half, he drove his home run into the left-field bleachers. The only other reliever to homer in the playoffs was the New York Giants' Rosy Ryan in Game 3 of the 1924 World Series.
Game 2 of the Los Angeles Dodgers-Washington National series was rained off and postponed until Sunday.
