Abueva best personifies Alaska's scrappy nature
No one in the Alaska roster personifies the team's blue collar traits more than Calvin Abueva, whose return from injury in the Philippine Cup has sparked the Aces' winning run.

Despite having no MVPs, scoring champions, or FIBA Asia Mythical team members on its roster, Alaska has been consistently one of the PBA's heavy contenders in the past couple of seasons.

While the Aces haven't won a title yet in making four of the past six Finals, it's always a tough outing against them and their recipe for success has been proven to win a lot of games.

Part of Alaska's super power is the team's ability to collect a group of guys who may not shine on the box score but can get the job done on the court regardless.

"We don't really have guys that are say, of the Terrence, Jayson, Junemar variety. But medyo gusto ko yun eh, mga blue collar team, ganun talaga kami. Just scrap - dive for the ball, hustle, run, go get it," head coach Alex Compton said of his squad.

And no one in the Alaska roster personifies these blue collar traits more than Calvin Abueva, whose return from injury in the Philippine Cup has sparked the Aces' winning run.

"It's all typified in Calvin, but you see it in Jaypee Mendoza, you see it in Chris Banchero, you see it in JVee, you see it throughout," Compton said.

"So I'm just really proud of our guys being who they are and playing really hard," he added.

With a scrappy group of guys, Compton only hopes that they turn into a scrappy group of champions soon.

"I wish we can say we were the best team but we haven't won a championship. Hopefully, that day will come. We've had a lot of not yets. But that's a long ways away," he said.
