IT'S MORE FUN. Byron Scott liked what he saw in the basketball played in the native land of his former player in Jordan Clarkson.
As it turns out, having a former player and a significant other who are both Filipino will lead you to the Philippines.
That is exactly what Byron Scott found out in visiting Manila for the first time.
The 55-year-old was at the San Juan Arena on Wednesday to watch the matchup between Meralco and Phoenix. Right there with him was Filipina girlfriend Cecilia Gutierrez.
According to Scott, it was his significant other who brought him to the Philippines.
It was also Gutierrez who gave her American boyfriend a taste of the Filipinos’ favorite sport. “My girlfriend is a good friend with a couple of coaches who then invited us to watch. I figures, let’s go see local basketball,” he shared.
And what the former coach of Filipino-American Los Angeles Laker Jordan Clarkson saw was promising. “I enjoyed it. There were talents that if they continue developing, they could be really good,” he said.
Scott most recently served as mentor for the Lakers a season ago. He also spent many of his playing years in purple and gold.
Scott and Gutierrez arrived in the country last Sunday and spent some time in Boracay before heading to Manila. “We’re vacationing,” he expressed.
As per Meralco team manager Paolo Trillo, the couple will be staying in the country until December 26. They will also be in attendance in the PBA’s Christmas Day offering at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
