TNT ends 2016 with a bang as KaTropa stop surging Aces

The Nash Racela era in TNT is finally starting to kick in.

On the strength of a solid first half, the KaTropa stopped the surging Alaska Aces, 109-100, Friday at the PhilSports Arena in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup.

TNT snapped Alaska's three-game winning run and won a second straight game with Racela in full control as head coach. The KaTropa likewise grabbed a share of second place in the All-Filipino standings, finishing their 2016 with a 4-2 record.

The KaTropa wasted no time in punishing the Aces as TNT immediately took control of the game, dropping 31 points in the first quarter alone on their way to a 16-point lead at the break.

While Alaska was able to recover in the third period, TNT only re-established its dominance in the final 12 minutes to keep the fighting Aces at bay.

"The goal today was to play consistent basketball for 48 minutes. When we talk about consistency, it's all [about] playing smart, 100 percent effort every possession," Racela said.

"Obviously we were struggling to do that but were just looking for improvements and I think today, maybe it wasn't 48 minutes but maybe 40 so I think that's acceptable," the former FEU champion mentor added.

Troy Rosario was the man for the KaTropa as the sophomore forward had his biggest game of the season so far, scoring 26 points, 18 coming from beyond the arc, and grabbed seven rebounds.

Jayson Castro and Larry Fonacier came of the bench and added 16 points apiece for TNT.

Over at the other side, the Aces dropped back to .500 with a 3-3 mark. Calvin Abueva led Alaska with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Vic Manuel and Kevin Racal combined for 30 points in reserve roles for the Aces.
