No pain no gain for Abueva, Aces
Since returning from a quad injury that forced him to miss the first two games of the season, the Beast has led the Aces to a 4-1 mark, giving Alaska a chance to make a play for one of the top-2 seeds in the playoffs.

Despite being battered and bruised, Calvin Abueva has totally changed Alaska's campaign in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup.

Since returning from a quad injury that forced him to miss the first two games of the season, the Beast has led the Aces to a 4-1 mark, giving Alaska a chance to make a play for one of the top-2 seeds in the playoffs.

However, while Abueva has certainly recharged his batteries after a long 19-day holiday break, the Beast's physical style of play most definitely comes at a price.

Late in Alaska's overtime win against Star, Abueva appeared to have hurt his left hand after an awkward fall on a fastbreak play.

"Huling bagsak yung wrist ko natukod ko kaya medyo masakit," he said though it did cap a brilliant performance that saw him score 23 points, grab nine rebounds, dish out two assists, and also go crazy on defense by way of four steals and a block.

Already off to a good start in 2017, Abueva and the Aces don't plan on hitting the breaks just yet.

With four games left in their schedlue, which includes mathcup with current no. 2 Rain or Shine, Alaska's sole focus right now is piling up enough wins to make it to the next round.

"Syempre itong 2017 first game pa lang namin, first win, syempre marami pang makakalaban kaya di pwedeng magre-relax eh," the Beast said.

"Goal namin talagang makuha, may chance pa rin sa top two. [Pero] hindi naman namin [iniisip] yun, ang goal namin makapasok sa playoffs," he added.
