Aces eliminate Mahindra and two other teams in PH Cup
The Aces fired 33 points in the final 12 minutes against the Floodbuster, turning a two-point third quarter lead into a 107-91 win Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

With Mahindra proving to be a tough out, Alaska needed a big fourth-quarter effort to make sure it doesn't fall behind in a heated Philippine Cup playoff race.

The Aces fired 33 points in the final 12 minutes against the Floodbuster, turning a two-point third quarter lead into a 107-91 win Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Alaska thus moved to 5-4 for the season-opening conference, right in the middle of a mad scramble for the no. 2 spot in the standings.

The Aces also eliminated Mahindra  with their latest win. NLEX and Meralco are also out of the Philippine Cup thanks to Alaska taking the well-earned decision.

After a competitive opening period, the Aces used a second-quarter burst to establish an 11-point lead at the break.

However, with their backs against the wall, the Floodbuster came out rolling in the third, unloading an 11-0 run to close the gap and make it a game, 72-74.

That's when Calvin Abueva, Dondon Hontiveros, and Vic Manuel came to the rescue for the Aces as the veteran trio combined to outscore Mahindra 21-19 in the fourth period to seal the win for Alaska.

"Today, the veteran leaders came in in the second half. How about Dondon in the fourth? He set the clock back there a little bit. I'm grateful that I get to have those guys on my team. They made the plays and they finished the game," head coach Alex Compton said.

Manuel finished with 20 points for the Aces while Abueva added 18 and 10 rebounds. Hontiveros fired seven, all in the fourth.

Alex Mallari paced the Floodbuster with 23 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Gilas cadet Russel Escoto meanwhile arguably played his best pro game so far and dropped 16 off the bench.
