Gilas return for Blur, Beast appears to be set in new pool
Jayson Castro is expected to come out of national team retirement once he gets named to the new Gilas Pilipinas pool.
The new Gilas Pilipinas pool will finally be complete as the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is set to announce the 12 players that will join the Gilas Cadets Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.
With 2017 being the first year of a crucial stretch for the national team that hopefully concludes with a trip to China for the 2019 FIBA World Cup and to Japan for the 2020 Olympics, the SBP is pulling out all the stops to make sure the strongest Philippine team is sent out to international tournaments starting with the SEABA joust.
With the current agreement, returning head coach Chot Reyes is set to pick one player per PBA team that will join the Gilas Pilipinas cadets headlined by Mac Belo.
The announcement will take place in between games of the PBA double-header Sunday at ULTRA.
Expected to be one of the 12 players selected is reigning three-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo of the San Miguel Beermen as well as the league's top scorer Terrence Romeo of Globalport.
Also expected to return to the national team is Calvin Abueva of Alaska who missed out on the final cut during last year's Olympic Qualifying tournament much to the dismay of a lot of fans.
TNT's Jayson Castro, who retired from national team duty last year, is likewise poised for a return to Gilas Pilipinas.
Already in the Gilas pool are Belo, Jio Jalalon, Matthew Wright, Carl Bryan Cruz, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, RR Pogoy, Mike Tolomia, Arnold Van Opstal, Von Pessumal, Russel Escoto, and Alfonso Gotladera.
