"Siya yung puso ng Gilas ngayon." --- Marc Pingris on Calvin Abueva.
Marc Pingris knows Gilas Pilipinas is in good hands despite being left out in the latest 25-man pool announced last week.
And as the heart and soul of the national team since 2013, Ping also knows that one player out of those 25 men has the capability to do all the things he did in the past, maybe even more.
That player is none other than the returning Calvin Abueva.
"Siya yung puso ng Gilas ngayon. Si Calvin talaga eh, siya pa lang talaga nakikita ko ngayon," Pingris said on the player likely to take over his role for the national team.
With Gilas Pilipinas dominated by younger faces, Pingris said the key for the enigmatic Alaska star is to be more vocal with the squad.
"Ang inaano ko lang sana mas more si Calvin," Pingris said. "Siya yung gusto kong maging vocal sa kanila dahil siya yung magbibigay ng energy sa team ngayon eh."
"Wag siyang mahiyang kausapin yung mga beterano, mga rookie dahil alam ko siya talaga ang magdadala," he added.
After playing a key role for the Philippines in the 2015 FIBA-Asia Championships in China, Abueva was infamoulsy left out of the 2016 FIBA OQT lineup, a tournament where Gilas laid an egg right in its home soil.
With the announcement of the new pool last week, the Beast being part of it was no surprise for anybody and it looks like he's primed for a bigger role this time around.
Just ask Ping. And Dondon Hontiveros.
