Sometimes it really pays to have a good start in basketball.
Despite a slower second-half effort, Wangs Basketball beat Victoria Sports to open their 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup campaign, 92-83, Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Wangs appeared to be on its way to an easy victory after putting up a strong 21-point lead late in the first half, 49-28.
However, Victoria Sports would stage a comeback in the third, cutting the deficit to as low as five points several times but could never completely turn the game around.
Wangs would eventually settle for a nine-point win for a 1-0 record. Victoria Sports dropped to 0-1 to start its season.
"Maganda, yung depensa namin nagagawa namin then nae-execute namin yung mga plays. Yun yung naging key namin kanina," head coach Pablo Lucas said.
Marlon Gomez and John Tambeling came through with 17 points apiece for Wangs but it was Gomez who did the heavy lifting late in the game, pouring 10 of his total output in the fourth period. He also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Rey Publico and Allen Enriquez also ended up in double figures for Wangs, scoring 14 and 10 respectively.
Robert Herndon led Victoria Sports with 19 points off the bench.
