Defense has failed Rain or Shine in late PH Cup collapse

Defense has failed Beau Belga and the rest of the Elasto Painters late in the 2017 Philippine Cup.
With yet another loss Sunday, Rain or Shine officially went from going for a top 2 spot in the Philippine Cup to fighting just to stay alive and not go on an early preparation for the Commissioner's Cup.
Breezing through a 5-2 record for solo second place just a couple of weeks ago, the Elasto Painters have lost three in a row and may be in a situation where they have to win an extra knockout game just to face two-time defending champion San Miguel Beer in the quarterfinals.
Not exactly ideal.
Fortunately, the Elasto Painters still have time to right the ship as they take on the Alaska Aces next week. A victory there means they get to enter the quarterfinals outright.
But before that though, Rain or Shine has to fix some things particularly on the defensive side of the ball. In the last three outings, especially against the Batang Pier, defense has failed them.
Particularly against Globalport though as Terrence Romeo scored a PBA career-high 44 points. The Bro was on point he managed to score 20 points in the second quarter alone and another 19 in the fourth.
Stanley Pringle also exposed the Rain or Shine defense to the tune of 28 points.
"I can't lie, it's frustrating," Gabe Norwood said on their defensive effort against Romeo. "Especially in a game that we need to win and the situation that is going on tonight. He [Romeo] stepped up for his team and that's what he's expected to fo. We didn't do our job as a unit to try and slow him down."
Beau Belga shared the same sentiment, focusing on the fact that it only took two guys to beat them at such a crucial point of the All-Filipino.
"Defense ang problema namin. Kung ako, hindi ko inaano, pero nung bagu-bago ako sa liga, pagkaganyang klase na nakaka-bente ka, iba na," Belga said.
"Hindi ka basta-basta makaka-score. Kahit ma-fine na ako, wala na pakialam. Pero hindi na pwede nagyon yun eh, so pagalingan na lang dumepensa," he added, pointing to the fact the PBA rules get to protect scorers a little bit, limiting some overly physical plays.
But still, in order to avoid further complications to their playoff run, Rain or Shine will have to fix its broken defense. Fast.
"We need it on Wednesday [vs. the Aces]. Wala kaming choice," Belga said.
