Star, TNT go for early lead in PBA quarterfinals
On deck for the first pair of quarterfinal pairings are no. 4 TNT KaTropa vs. no. 5 Globalport Batang Pier and no. 3 Star Hotshots vs. no. 6 Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Barely 24 hours since the end of an extended elimination round, the PBA heads straight to the 2017 Philippine Cup playoffs Saturday at the MOA Arena.

On deck for the first pair of quarterfinal pairings are no. 4 TNT KaTropa vs. no. 5 Globalport Batang Pier and no. 3 Star Hotshots vs. no. 6 Phoenix Fuel Masters.

TNT and Globalport take the court first at 3:00 p.m. for Game 1 of their best-of-three series. Both teams finished with 6-5 records in the elimination round although the KaTropa hold the early edge after taking their last meeting, 102-98, last Jan. 25.

The Batang Pier however, carry momentum as they come into this matchup fresh from a win over Rain or Shine after a career-high 44 points from star guard Terrence Romeo. TNT fell short of its regular season finale against San Miguel last week.

In the second game at 5:15 p.m., Star go for an early lead against Phoenix in their own best-of-three affair.

The Hotshots not only come into this matchup with the better record (7-4 compared to 6-5 for Phoenix), Star holds the pyschological edge after beating the Fuel Masters, 123-79, at the same venue last December.

That 44-point loss still has to be on the mind of Phoenix although the Fuel Masters did put that behind them and won four of the last six games to make the playoffs.
