SECOND QUARTER STORM. TNT wasn't going to be stopped after a 37-point explosion in the second quarter.
TNT did not get off to the best of starts in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup Quarterfinals.
But Mo Tautuaa and Larry Fonacier made sure that was only true for one quarter.
Behind a massive 37-point second period, the KaTropa shot down Terrence Romeo and Globalport, 109-101, on Saturday at the MOA Arena to get a leg up in their best-off-three series.
Behind by 10 points following the opening salvo, Tautuaa and Fonacier connived to spearhead the second quarter surge that, all of a sudden, granted TNT a 61-56 advantage by halftime.
Jayson Castro only kept the KaTropa’s foot on the pedal as they increased their lead to as high as 18, 86-68, in the third.
Romeo finally got into his groove inside the last six minutes, but by then,Castro and company had all the answers.
The two-time best point guard in Asia wound up with 20 points and was reinforced by 17 points apiece from Tautuaa and Fonacier.
Still, it was defense that won the game, if head coach Nash Racela is to be believed. “The objective tonight was to limit the production of Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle. I think the players did their best in containing them,” he said.
Romeo still had 28 points, but struggled for majority of the matchup until his 15-point final frame when TNT’s margin was already more than comfortable. Pringle had 19 points, but was a non-factor in the endgame.
The KaTropa try to wrap up the series with a clean sweep on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.
