Champion Beermen, Aces target semis return

The prize for San Miguel and Alaska's hard work is they have the chance to make it back to the semifinals after just one win, and they can get to do that as the PBA continues the 2017 Philippine Cup quarterfinals at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Sunday.
The gap may have widened a little bit, at least for now, but San Miguel Beer and Alaska remain as the two best PBA teams in the Philippine Cup.
Protagonists of the last two All-Filipino Finals, both the Beermen and the Aces have secured the top two seeds in this year's playoffs.
The prize for their hard work is they have the chance to make it back to the semifinals after just one win, and they can get to do that as the PBA continues the 2017 Philippine Cup quarterfinals at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Sunday.
Up first at 4:30 p.m. are the two-time defending champion Beermen as no. 1 San Miguel takes on no. 8 Rain or Shine.
The champs enter the postseason having dominated the elimination round with a 10-1 record, winning nine straight games including an overtime thriller vs. ROS barely a month ago.
As for the Elasto Painters, they come in following a knockout game victory over Blackwater Elite just last Friday. However, Rain or Shine should be better than its 5-6 record suggests.
In the second game at 6:45 p.m., the Aces face off against Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel in a rematch of the 2016 Governors' Cup quarterfinals.
Unlike last conference though, Alaska holds the upperhand right now by virtue of its 7-4 record compared to Ginebra's 6-5. It's not much but the Aces did beat Ginebra by 15 points in their last outing.
San Miguel and Alaska both hold a twice-to-beat advantage in this playoff set, should the Gin Kings and/or the Elasto Painters take a game, a knockout is scheduled for Tuesday at the Big Dome.
