Making his playoff debut with San Miguel, Garcia did not disappoint as the former UAAP Most Valuable Player came through with 25 points, four rebounds, three assist, and shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
As if they don't already have enough weapons in the All-Filipino, two-time defending champion San Miguel revealed a new one just in time for the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.
Playing a dangerous Rain or Shine team in the quarterfinals Sunday, the Beermen turned to RR Garcia for them to make a return trip to the semifinals.
Making his playoff debut with San Miguel, Garcia did not disappoint as the former UAAP Most Valuable Player came through with 25 points, four rebounds, three assists, and shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
With San Miguel mostly relying on a top-heavy offense featuring June Mar Fajardo and friends, Garcia's explosion is a welcome dynamic for the champs.
"Kailangan mag-step up kasi di lang yung first group ang aasahan namin. Dapat pati second group, makatulong para manalo yung team," Garcia said of his effort.
"Ganoon naman sa practice, sinasabihan ako na pag libre, tira lang. Wala namang mawawala kung di maka-shoot. Binibigyan talaga nila ako ng kumpyansa," he added.
Since being drafted out of FEU in 2013, Garcia is actually making his first trip to the PBA semifinals.
Him having the big game to help the Beermen advance actually sounds poetic for a guy who used to do a lot of winning in the collegiate ranks before having a journeyman type of career in the pros.
"First time ko mag-semis," Garcia admits. "Sabi ni coah may history ang San Miguel na natatalo sa first game pag twice-to-beat. Pinatunayan namin na di na mauulit."
"Sa akin, excited ako na makapasok sa semis. Mas tataasan ko pa yung icontribute ko sa team. Di kami aasa na hanggang doon na lang," he added.
