June Mar Fajardo and the champion Beermen were too much for the TNT KaTropa in Game 1 of their best-of-7 PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series.
Simply put, San Miguel is on a whole other level right now in the Philippine Cup.
The two-time defending champions drew first blood in their best-of-7 PBA semifinals series against TNT after a convincing 111-98 victory in Game 1 over the KaTropa Wednesday at the Big Dome.
In a titanic clash of two of the PBA's most loaded teams, the Beermen overpowered the KaTropa from start to finish, unloading a quick 7-0 run in the first quarter and never looked back.
San Miguel maintained a steady double-digit lead all the way to its 13-point series-opening win, never allowing the KaTropa to really get close in the contest.
Three players scored over 20 points for the champs led by Marcio Lassiter's 22. He also had eight rebounds and five assists.
Three-time league MVP June mar Fajardo came through with 21 points for the Beermen while Alex Cabagnot scored 20. Arwind Santos and Gabby Espinas also scored in double figures, finishing with 15 and 13 points respectively.
San Miguel's win was its 11th straight for the season (tied for a frachise record), the longest winning streak in the PBA since the then Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters won 13 in a row in the 2014 Commissioner's Cup. The Beermen last dropped a game in November 30 of last year, the team's second game this conference.
"Masaya ako dito first win namin, dahil alam natin na very important yung first win dito sa series, in any series. I'm a little bit worried at the start, dahil 10 consecutive games and then parang naf-feel ko, sooner or later, matatalo kami," head coach Leo Austria said.
"I prayed na sana, wag munang mangyari dito sa first game namin. We're not after doon sa winning streak namin, but every game, we're out there to win," he added.
TNT, who advanced to the semis after sweeping Globalport in the quarterfinals, got big games from Jayson Castro and Kelly Williams but never really got it going against the champs.
The Blur finished with a game-high 27 points and eight assists while William's revival tour continued with 24 points off the bench.
Game 2 is set for Friday at the MOA Arena.
