"Kailangan ko lang siguro mag-trabaho at humingi ng tulong sa taas at the same time sa mga players ko." --- Chito Victolero on matchup against Tim Cone.
Imagine if you are a rookie coach locked in a semifinal series against the greatest coach in Philippine basketball history who has won a total of 19 championships.
Well congratulations, you are Star's Chito Victolero.
The first-time Hotshots mentor is in that kind of situation as he matches up with Ginebra's Tim Cone in a Manila Clasico race-to-four in the 2017 PBA Philippine CUp.
And despite taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 following Thursday's Game 1 win, Victolero acknowledges that his own personal coaching genius may not be enough to truly compete to that of Cone's.
He needs help. Fortunately, his team came through and thus their early series advantage.
"Sabi ko nga sa mga players ko isa sa mga idol ko yan eh, si coach Tim," Victolero said.
"And you cannot outcoach coach Tim. Ang hiniling ko sa kanila, you have to help me. You have to give your suggestions, open ako sa lahat. I know coach Tim is a champion coach, yung respeto namin sa kanya napakataas," he added.
While Victolero's resume still pales in comparison to Cone's, he does deserve credit for leading the turnaround the Hotshots have experienced this season.
As it stands, Star has won seven straight games in the All-Filipino, erasing the bitter memories of last year's campaign.
Still, in order to take down Cone and his champion Gin Kings, Victolero is gonna need some help. He's going to get it from his team.
"Yun lang kailangan ko lang siguro mag-trabaho at humingi ng tulong sa taas at the same time sa mga players ko," Victolero said.
