"Sinasabi nga nila Pingris time na talaga dito sa playoffs. So kung saan pupunta si Ping, doon lang kami." --- Paul Lee.
Ginebra might be in deeper trouble than we originally thought.
That's because when a PBA conference reaches the semifinal stage, a certain Star player starts to really get it going and his teammates naturally follow suit.
With the Hotshots having another deep playoff run, that means "Pingris time" is back in play. That means trouble for the Gin Kings.
Although "Pingris time" started off as more of a joke than an actual rallying cry, the Hotshots have nevertheless embraced the whole thing, resulting in a commanding 2-0 lead against Ginebra in their Manila Clasico semifinals in the 2017 Philippine Cup.
"Nung ano pa yun eh, kay coach Tim. Nauso yan pag semis," forward Marc Pingris narrates. "Kumbaga nauso lang. So every semis yun yung sinasabi ko 'oh Pingris time na ah' pauso lang. Kailangan magtrabaho eh, kailangan manalo."
One of the players heavily influenced by "Pingris time" is Paul Lee, who has starred in his semis debut with the Hotshots by coming up clutch in both games of the series so far.
Despite labeling himself only as one of the "backups", Lee playing well means Star is clicking as well.
"Sinasabi nga nila Pingris time na talaga dito sa playoffs. So kung saan pupunta si Ping, doon lang kami kasi siya talaga yung true leader dito sa team, backup backup lang kami sa kanya," Lee said.
Sure, a 2-0 lead is far from a safe lead in a best-of-7. But the Gin Kings may be in bigger trouble than we actually think.
"Pingris time" is in full effect after all.
"Ang hirap kasi na magce-celebrate ka ngayon 2-0 pa lang tapos mamaya pag tinalo ka masakit yun eh," Pingris said.
"Sabi lang ni coach be humble lang kayo. Mas magutom pa kayo, yun lagi niyang sinasabi samin eh. Wag na natin kumbaga bigyan ng buhay. Parang sinasabi samin, piso-piso ang labanan, 50-50 ball parang ganun," he added.
