With two months to go before the SEABA joust, which the country will host at the Araneta Coliseum, Gilas Pilipinas is hard-pressed to put together the strongest lineup available as only the champion from the sub-regional tournament will get an invite to the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.
With their first tournament turning out to be a must win, Gilas Pilipinas start their 2017 buildup with a mini camp ahead of the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
The national team begin its preparations for the upcoming SEABA championships by holding a three-day camp in Tagaytay starting Tuesday and will wrap up a day before the mid-season PBA tournament unfolds Friday.
All members of the pool, including Andray Blatche but with the exception of the injured Russel Escoto, are expected to participate.
Three-time league MVP June Mar Fajardo leads the Gilas Pilipinas veterans alongside two-time FIBA-Asia Mythical team member Jayson Castro.
Scoring champion Terrence Romeo is also expected to take a more serious role with the new version of Gilas under Chot Reyes while Calvin Abueva will be making his triumphant return to the national team.
Paul Lee, Raymond Almazan, Norbert Torres, Art Dela Cruz, Jonathan Grey, LA Revilla, Bradwyn Guinto, Mac Belo, Matthew Wright, Ed Daquioag, Jio Jalalon, Carl Bryan Cruz, RR Pogoy, Mike Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Kevin Ferrer, Arnold Van Opstal, and Alfonso Gotladera complete the lineup.
The first tournament for Gilas Pilipinas this year is the SEABA Championships which the country will host on May 12-18. That tournament is Southeast Asia's qualifer for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup slated some time in August.
