HOLDING DOWN THE FORT. Rom Junsay stepped up big in the absence of Mike Enriquez and Sherwin Concepcion and will only step up bigger for Malayan.
With veteran leaders Mike Enriquez and Sherwin Concepcion out with injuries, Malayan High School of Science pulled out a pleasant surprise of a deep lineup en route to its first championship since 2000.
And throughout that title run, no player stepped up bigger than Rom Junsay.
The five-foot-six guard proved to be just the boost that got the Red Robins over the hump – a hump the size of dynastic San Beda High School, no less.
Looking back, it was undoubtedly the right decision for head coach Randy Alcantara to have travelled to Laguna in 2014. Talking about how he was recruited, Junsay said, “Galing pong Los Banos, pumunta akong Mapua.
Now recognized to be among the best of the best as an NBTC All-Star, the pint-sized pointman still can’t believe how far he has come.
He also added, continuing to marvel at why he was chosen, “Kasi ‘di pa rin po ako kuntento sa mga nagawa ko.
Nonetheless, Junsay is out to spread his wings even more – in the NBTC, in the NCAA, and in the years to come.
