ON-POINT. San Beda's big lead in the earlygoing proved to be enough against charging FEU-Diliman.
Far Eastern University-Diliman was off to a strong start in the semifinals of the 2017 National Basketball Training Center League National Finals.
However, it didn’t take long to San Beda High School to catch up and capture the momentum it would never relinquish.
Stroking the nets with nine triples in the first half alone before quelling the inevitable rally in the endgame, the Red Cubs shot down the Baby Tamaraws, 93-89, to claim the first seat in the tournament Finals on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
The NCAA powerhouse found itself in an early 2-8 hole before the entry of Sam Abu Hijleh and Evan Nelle.
With their stalwarts in the game, San Beda energized a 21-10 charge that took a 23-18 advantage in their favor after the first. Nelle only kept coming in the second and led his team in mounting a lead of as high as 17.
In all, the Red Cubs shot a scorching 52.9 percent from deep. Nelle and Luke Sese each had three treys to their names. “Nagulat din ako na ang taas nung percentage namin nung first half. Pero champion team ‘to so alam naming babalik,” coach JB Sison said.
indeed, the Baby Tamaraws kept coming especially with L-Jay Gonzales just turning it on. Firing all but six of his 21 points in the second half, he willed his team to 76-79 inside the last seven minutes only to see Nelle and Prince Etrata connive for seven unanswered points and an 87-76 San Beda lead.
Gonzales again had the UAAP champions threatening at 85-89 with two minutes to go until the Red Cubs stood strong on defense and Nelle took care of the offense.
Nelle wound up with 20 points built on six triples while Sese and Etrata chimed in 14 and 13 points, respectively. As a team, they totaled 15 long-range bombs.
San Beda will now await the winner between Malayan High School of Science and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
FEU-Diliman exits the tournament after its gallant stand fell short. Gonzales also tallied five assists and four rebounds in the losing effort while Kenji Roman added a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.
