Yap's dagger three helps lift ROS over NLEX in Comm's Cup
With NLEX still within four points, 103-107, Yap made Bradwyn Guinto look silly by hitting him with a nasty ankle-breaker before burying a step-back three with 40.4 seconds to go, capping the win for the Elasto Painters.

Now that is how you start a title defense.

Showing he's already comfortable with his new team, James Yap turned back to clock by at least five years and led defending champion Rain or Shine past the NLEX Road warriors, 113-105, Friday at the Big Dome to open the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup.

With NLEX still within four points, 103-107, Yap made Bradwyn Guinto look silly by hitting him with a nasty ankle-breaker before burying a step-back three with 40.4 seconds to go, capping the win for the Elasto Painters.

Yap played his best game in a ROS uniform, going for 26 points, built around five treys, to go along with three rebounds and one assist.

"It's nice to have James Yap back," head coach Caloy Garcia said.

"Basically last conference medyo may pressure not only on him but even on me on using James Yap kasi I felt last conference his knee wasn't that good pa so when offseason, medyo maganda takbo niya sa practice. I just hope he's healthy, if he's healthy then he'll be the old James Yap," he added.

Big Game James certainly looked healthy against NLEX, especially in the fourth quarter, as the two-time league MVP fired 13 points to save the Elasto Painters from a near collapse.

Rain or Shine was in control and even led by as much as 12 points before Wayne Chism, a former ROS import, went to work for NLEX, scoring 15 points in the third to grab the lead for the Road Warriors.

The game was still pretty much on the line late before Yap made his move, once again frustrating Yeng Guioa's crew.

Aside from Yap, import Shawn Taggart also had a nice game for ROS, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Raymond Almazan added 18 points off the bench.

Chism ended up with 27 for the Road Warriors while Carlo Lastimos led four NLEX locals in double figures with 15.
