El Destructor carries Phoenix to double-OT win against Elite

Eugene Phelps scores 53 points in his first game back in the PBA to lead the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a double-overtime win against Blackwater.
The first game Eugene Phelps played in the PBA, he lost a tooth but managed to score 52 points in leading Phoenix to a win against the Globalport Batang Pier.
In his first game back in the PBA for the 2017 Commissioner's Cup, El Destructor was one point better, dropping a new career-high of 53 in leading the Fuel Masters to a tough 118-116 double-overtime victory against Blackwater Elite Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
"He's not El Destructor for nothing," head coach Ariel Vanguardia said of his reinforcement. "We know what Eugene can give us. He gives us all his effort, all his energy. He's El Destructor."
Phelps, who is on borrowed time in the mid-season conference due to a prior commitment in Puerto Rico, also grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked five shots.
El Destructor did most of his damage in the second half after he scored 40 after the break including 19 points in the third quarter and another nine in both overtime periods.
With the Elite taking a 112-110 lead to start the second overtime period, Phelps took control of the Phoenix offense and scored back-to-back points for a two-point lead with 2:35 remaining.
Phelps then nailed the dagger with 40 second to go, giving the Fuel masters a 118-116 lead. Roi Sumang scored a three for Blackwater for the final tally.
"It was a well-played game. I think you have t ogive credit to Blackwater, both teams probably deserve to win tonight, it's just that one team had enough energy," Vanguardia said.
Aside from Phelps, JC Intal also scored in double figues for Phoenix with 11 points while Cyrus Bagiuo and Willie Wilso added 10 each.
For the Elite, import Greg Smith had an incredible debut with 37 points and 30 rebounds in a losing effort. Rookie Mac Belo dropped 21.
