GETTING IT DONE. Jerwin Gaco and Mark Cruz made things happen for Tanduay in the third quarter against Cignal.
Heading into the Final Four of the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, Cignal-San Beda College had rang off eight consecutive victories.
All of that came to an end, however, on Tuesday at the Marikina Sports Complex at the hands of veterans Jerwin Gaco and Mark Cruz and the rest of Tanduay.
Firing 22 of their combined 31 points in the third quarter, Gaco and Cruz proved to be too much in the Rhum Masters’ 66-55 upset of the top-seeded Hawkeyes.
The veterans by themselves outscored all of their opponents, 22-15, in the third quarter onslaught that carried Tanduay to the brink of the Finals.
With the big-time win, they go up 1-0 in the best-of-three series. Still, coach Lawrence Chongson was quick to point out, “We haven’t won anything yet. We’ll go back to the drawing board.”
Cignal actually started strong and had a three-point lead after the opening salvo only to be dominated in the middle periods, 45-21.
Gaco wound up with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists while Cruz had 15 markers to his name.
For the Hawkeyes, it was Pamboy Raymundo who showed the way with 13 points. With their defense going missing in the second and third quarters, however, they suffered their first setback in their last nine outings.
