The Boss takes charge for Alaska as Aces stop 30-30 Smith
Thoss, who appears to be 100 percent healthy for the first time this season, did more than just neutralize Smith as Alaska rolled to its second straight win of the mid-season conference in as many games.

After Greg Smith impressed in his PBA Commissioner's Cup debut with 37 points and 30 rebounds in a double-overtime loss to Phoenix last March 18, Alaska was naturally going to put a little more focus on the former Houston Rocket as the Aces took on the Blackwater Elite Wednesday.

Head coach Alex Compton decided to put veteran Sonny Thoss on the profilic import, hoping to try and neutralize his production.

Thoss, who appears to be 100 percent healthy for the first time this season, did more than just neutralize Smith as Alaska rolled to its second straight win of the mid-season conference in as many games.

With the Boss in charge, Smith was limited to only 14 points and 16 rebounds this time around and fouled at at the 7:28 mark of the fourth quarter.

"We really respect Blackwater, they beat us fair and square last conference. We know they're good and that Greg Smith is an NBA-quality player," Compton said.

"Sonny might need an ice bath pretty soon. It's a good thing Sonny was able to grab some fouls on him," he added.

As for Thoss, who wound up with 10 points and seven rebounds in a little over 24 minutes of play, deflected the credit off to his teammates.

"I was just trying to stay aggressive," he said of his performance.

"My teammates were also behind me so they also deservethe credit. The guards are helping me, the [big] guys are helping me," Thoss added.

Zooming to a 2-0 start despite still missing quite a few key pieces to their lineup, Thoss says it's all about stepping up for the Aces.

"There's always someone there who is ready to step up. That's the great thing about our team. Everybody is ready to step up and play when the ball comes," he said.
